Brief History of Denmark Football

Denmark is one of the European nations to play football in the eighteenth century. The Danish government formed its authorized body Danish Football Union (DBU) in 1889. It is one of the founding countries of FIFA established in 1904.

Danish football made a victory in their first international match against France B 9-0 in October 1908. In the 1912 Olympics, Denmark won a silver medal which led to receiving the World’s best team record by the ELO ranking. From 1920 to 1948, the Danish team played friendly matches with several nations.

In the 1964 Euro Championship, Denmark debuted in the tournament and finished as a four after losing to Hungary in the third-place match. Then, the team did not qualify until 1984.  And in that World Cup, they finished third. Two years later, Denmark made its World Cup debut and was out of the tournament from the second round.

The Danish team’s golden moments came in the 1992 UEFA Cup when they made a victory to lift the trophy. In the finals, Denmark defeated Germany 2-0. And in 1995, they won the FIFA Confederation Cup.

Then, they did not reach the semi-finals several times. In the 2020 Euro Cup, after a long time, the team made it into the semifinals but lost against England.

Denmark’s FIFA World Cup History

Denmark has a relatively lower score in the FIFA World Cup than the UEFA championship. The nation is a founding member of FIFA but did not debut until 1986. After the Argentina World Cup, the team did not make it into the 1990 and 1994 World Cup.

They came back in France’s World Cup but that time also out of the quarter-finals. After that, they made only three appearances out of six completed events. The Qatar World Cup is the sixth appearance for the country. Denmark booked their seat for Qatar World Cup after becoming the winner of Group F.

Qatar World Cup 2022 Denmark Squad

Denmark is a part of Group D, and it will face defending champions France, Tunisia, and Australia in group matches. The Danish team will play their first match against Tunisia on 22 November 2022 at Education City Stadium, Al Rayyan.

The opening match of this World Cup will take place on 20 November, where host nation Qatar will meet Ecuador. In August 2020, DBU appointed former player Kasper Hjulmand as their manager. Since then Hjulmand has been leading the team, and he has made the Euro semifinals and World Cup participant.

Many DBU players were celebrated in the past including Henning Jensen, Michael Laudrup, Brian Laudrup, and Allan Simonsen. Cristian Ericksen is one of the greatest players from Denmark who currently plays for EPL club Manchester United. Denmark’s official squad will announce in October 2022.
