Qatar national men’s team will play the twenty-second edition of the FIFA World Cup 2022. Qatar did not play in the qualifying round; it selected the spot automatically as the host nation.

The first time Qatar is participating in the world’s biggest football event. Qatar has not passed any single world cup qualifying round since its independence in 1971.

As of August 2022, FIFA ranks 49 for the Qatar national men’s football team. However, Qatar is a regular participant in the Asian continental game AFC Asian Cup. And in 2019, Qatar made history by winning the title of the AFC championship.

Qatar Football History (Pre-1970 to 2022)

Qatar has a long history of football. In 1948, the first time foreign oil staff played official football matches there. Qatar started playing football during the British sovereign era. It was under the control of the British government from 1916-1971.

In 1960, Qatar formed the governing body of football-Qatar Football Association which joined FIFA in 1970. In the same year, Arabian Gulf Cup was created by 8 Arabic nations, including Qatar. The nation participated in the match and ended with the fourth position, whereas Kuwait won the competition. Qatar is one of the strong teams in the Middle East.

In 1975, first time it passed the qualifying stages for the AFC Asian Cup. After two years, The Qatari national team played its first FIFA World Cup qualifying match but could not pass the final step. Since then, Qatar has represented in numerous tournaments like Asian Cup, Olympics, Gulf Cup, Asian Games, etc.

Spanish manager Felix Sanchez currently leads the Qatari team. Under his coaching, Qatar won the title of the AFC Asian Cup 2019 for the first time, defeating Japan.

Other major continental tournaments have also invited Qatar. In 2019, it played in Copa América as an invitee organized by (CONMEBOL). Similarly, in 2021, the Qatari team went to Central America to participate in the CONCACAF Gold Cup as Qatar received an invitation from there.

FIFA World Cup 2022 Qatar National Team

Qatari national team is in the six-month-long training preparing for World Cup. They are preparing as much as possible to score well in the upcoming global event.

Recently, Qatar played two friendly matches with Bulgaria and Slovenia, and it will play another few games before its opening match with Ecuador on November 20 at Al Bayt Stadium.
