Salman Rushdie Attacked During An Event in 2022

The famous author, Salman Rushdie was just preparing for his speech at an event in Chautauqua, New York on 12 August 2012. All of a sudden, a man named Hadi Matar rushed into the stage and repeatedly stabbed him until he became unconscious. The attacker quickly pulled away from Rushdie before being taken into custody.

Severely injured, Salman was rushed to a hospital in Erie, Pennsylvania, and immediately underwent surgery. His agent, Andrew Wylie told:

Salman will likely lose one eye; the nerves in his arm were severed, and his liver was stabbed and damaged.

As of August, Salman is currently going through treatments on a ventilator. Due to his severe injuries, he is unable to speak. Back in 1989, the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a fatwa calling for his assassination. Since then, Salman was under British police protection.

Rushdie was then introduced to the Australian writer, Robyn Davidson through their mutual friend, Bruce Chatwin. The couple lived in a relationship for some years and split. Salman’s second wife, Marianne Wiggins is also an American novelist, whom he married from 1988 to 1993.

Salman Rushdie aka Sir Ahmed Salman Rushdie was born on 19 June 1947 in Bombay, British India (now Mumbai, India). His father, Anis Ahmed Rushdie was a lawyer and businessman, whereas, his mother, Negin Bhatt was a teacher. He grew up in an Indian Kashmiri Muslim family with his three sisters. 

Rushdie joined the Cathedral and John Connon School in South Bombay and then moved to England in order to attend the Rugby School in Warwickshire. The Cambridge graduate earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from King’s College, Cambridge.
