A South American country Chile appealed FIFA’s decision to dismiss their complaint against rival Ecuador for using ineligible player Byron Castillo. As per Chilean appeals, Castillo is a Colombian, not an Ecuadorian. Chile recently opposed FIFA’s case dismissal happened in June 2022.
What is Chile claiming regarding Ecuadorian Byron Castillo?
Two South American nations, Chile and Ecuador controversy started in May when Chile alleged Ecuador’s young player Byron Castillo, who Chile believed to be a Colombian citizen.
The national football federation of Chile appealed to FIFA to investigate this issue and dismiss it from the Qatar World Cup’s participation. So that Chile would directly qualify for the tournament.
According to Chile’s argument, Ecuadorian winger Castillo was born in Tumaco, Columbia, in 1995, not in Ecuador in 1998.
The statement also claimed that Chile has supporting documents of the accused case too. Chile prepared this draft in April after Ecuador has placed into Group A, along with host nations Qatar, Senegal, and the Netherlands for the winter World Cup.
What is FIFA’s Answer to this Case?
In April 2022, Chile filed a case against Ecuador at FIFA. Then, FIFA analyzed and investigated all valid documents, and the FIFA’s disciplinary committee rejected Chile’s appeal on June 10, 2022. However, the football federation of Chile opposed FIFA’s decision on July 1.
Now, FIFA is trying to set out this case, and it hired a top-notch judge and a former White House Counsel in the second term of former POTUS Barack Obama. According to FIFA’s official reports, the organization dismissed Chile’s appeal on 16 September 2022.
