Who is Nobel Peace Prize winner Ales Bialiatski? Know everything about him

The 2022 Nobel peace prize has been awarded to human rights advocate Ales Bialiatski along with organisations Memorial and Center for Civil Liberties. The winner of Nobel prize was announced on Friday October 7 in Oslo by Berit Reiss-Andersen, chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee. Bialiatski is a Belarusian civic leader and former prisoner of conscience popular for his work with the “Human Rights Centre Viasna”. In 2020, he won an International award named “Right Livelihood Award” which is also known as “Alternate Nobel Prize”. Since 2021, he has been imprisoned due to tax evasion.

This year Nobel Peace prize has been awarded to Belarusian campaigner Ales Bialiatski who is behind the bar. The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced winners in Oslo. Apart from this, three scientists jointly bagged honours in Physics. In literature, French author Annie Ernaux took the honour of Nobel prize literature on her name. The 2022 Nobel prize for economics yet to be announced

As per the Nobel committee:

“The Nobel Peace Prize laureates represent civil society in their home countries. They have for many years promoted the right to criticise power and protect the fundamental rights of citizens.”

The committee further said:

“They have made an outstanding effort to document war crimes, human right abuses and the abuse of power. Together they demonstrate the significance of civil society for peace and democracy.”

Who is Ales Bialiatiski- a political prisoner, human right activist, philanthropist

Ales Bialiatiski is the founder and owner of the country’s Viasna Spring Human Right centre, the organization was established in the year 1996. His Viasna always works for the betterment of people, especially supporting the jailed demonstrated their families.

Bialiatski has dedicated all his life to democracy and creating a peaceful environment in his country. He bagged several national and international awards. He spent three years in jail for tax evasion, from 2011 to 2014. However, he always denied the allegations that put on him.

In 2021, he was again sentenced to jail the Belarusian police searched Viasna’s employees’ houses around the country and raided his office. Upon searching, Bialiatski and his colleagues Vladimir Stephanovich and Vladimir Labkovich were arrested. On October 6, 2021, he and his colleagues were charged for tax evasion and imprisoned for 7 years.

International Recognition and Awards

Ales Bialiatski has several awards and recognition in his name. In March 2006, Bialiatski and Viasna won the 2005 Homo Homini Award (given by the Czech human rights). In 2006, he bagged the Per Anger prize, an award is for promoting democracy and humanitarian efforts.

The same year in 2006, he received Andrew Sakharov Freedom Award by the Norwegian Helsinki Committee. In 2011, he earned the recipient of National Award for Human Rights. Besides this, he is also the winner of the 2011 Human Rights Defenders Award by the US Department of State. In 2012 Bialiatski won the Lech Wałęsa Award for “democratisation of the Republic of Belarus. The same year he won Vaclev Havel Human Rights Award.

Eventually in 2022, Bialiatski was honoured with the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize. He shared the award along with the Memorial and Centre for Civil Liberties.

Ales Bialiatiski was born on 25 September 1962. Right Now, he is 60 years old. His place of birth was Vyartsilya, now Karelia. His father Viktar native of Rahacou District and his mother Nina was from the Naroulia district. In the year 1965, he returned with his family to settle in Belarus.

He is a scholar student of Belarusian literature. Furthermore, he completed his graduation from Homiel State University, receiving a degree in Russian and Belarusian Philology. After his graduation, he worked as a school teacher for sometime.
